What is a Leader?

I have had it on my mind for some time to clarify the definitions of words. Especially those that are so obviously being misunderstood or misapplied. Others are not so obvious but nevertheless have need of clarification.

The word I wish to tackle today is LEADER. The dictionary definition of a leader is: one that leads or conducts; a guide; a conductor. This fits with my understanding that a leader is someone that teaches and guides.

Very often in our society a leader is considered to be the one in charge that tells you what to do and you do it. I feel this is incorrect. A leader that does this is actually more of a dictator, tyrant, ruler. A leader will show you what to do instead of tell you what to do. Leadership is a position of service instead of one of control. One in a leadership position may have authority to do specific things, get specific things accomplished with the help of others, and it may put them in charge but it does not make them the boss. Anyone that has to use their authority to get things done is going beyond the role of a leader to the role of an authoritarian, tyrant, dictator, ruler. When they do this they actually lose their authority because it will not be respected. A leader leads with love instead of rules with fear.
